What Are Magic Mushrooms?

Introduction:

Magic mushrooms are the term that defines psychoactive fungi species, most of the time it is linked to psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

These mushrooms are considered psychedelic drugs, when ingested they can affect all the senses, altering a person’s thinking and emotions. Psychedelics most of the time cause a person to experience vivid hallucinations, closed and opened-eye visuals, and feelings of euphoria and well-being.

What is psilocybin and how does it work?

Psilocybin is a hallucinogenic compound found in the majority of psychoactive mushrooms.

It works by attaching to the serotonin receptors, as it’s structurally similar to it. It mostly affects the prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain that is responsible for mood regulation, cognition, and perception.

The quantity of the drug a user consumes combined with their past experiences and expectations will determine the effect of magic mushrooms. For instance, when taken in lower doses psilocybin can improve mood, and treat anxiety and depression without a user experiencing hallucinations. On the other hand, if the doses are higher users may enter an elevated state of consciousness that is often called a “psychedelic trip”.

The hallucinogenic effects of magic mushrooms usually occur within half an hour after a person has taken them, and last for about 4 to 6 hours.

How are magic mushrooms consumed?

There are many ways how people consume magic mushrooms, some of the most common ways are to eat them raw or dried, brewed as tea, or prepare them with other foods to mask the unpleasant taste. They can also be crushed into a fine powder and placed into capsules, or mixed with a batter to create cookies or chocolate.

The Effects of Magic Mushrooms

In general, psilocybin’s effects are similar to those of LSD. Among them are altered perceptions of time and space as well as intense changes in mood and feelings.

Other effects of psilocybin include:

  • euphoria
  • peacefulness
  • spiritual awakening
  • derealization,
  • depersonalization
  • distorted thinking
  • visual hallucinations
  • dilated pupils
  • lack of coordination
  • unusual body sensations
  • nausea and vomiting
  • confusion

The effects of psilocybin vary between users, based on their mental state, personality, and environment in which the drug is taken. Therefore some people may feel these effects while others don’t.

If the user has a mental health concern or is feeling anxious about taking magic mushrooms they may face a higher risk of something called a “bad trip”.

What’s a Bad Trip?

A bad trip is described as a negative experience caused by ingesting psychedelic substances. This kind of trip is followed by negative emotions, anxiety, and terrifying hallucinations. People who are insecure about whether they should or shouldn’t take magic mushrooms are more prone to this kind of experience. It’s important to be prepared before taking any kind of psychedelic drug.

There are several ways how to make the bad trip less intense such as:

  • Go to the safe environment
  • Listen to some relaxing music
  • Take deep breaths, relax and try to meditate

One of the most important things when taking psychedelics is to stay calm, be prepared, and don’t try to fight the trip. You should always “go with the flow”.
